The Canadian History of Education Association/Association canadienne d’histoire de l’éducation (CHEA/ACHÉ) will hold a special online symposium in October 2021 (precise dates TBD). The symposium does not replace the biennial conference, which will take place in-person from October 13th-15th, 2022, at the Inn at Laurel Point (Victoria, BC).
Instead, the symposium’s purpose is to bring new scholars in the history of education together with invited scholar-mentors for dynamic discussions that explore new directions in the history of education field. In light of the field’s essential need to speak to the history of current crises, we also welcome scholarship that considers the history of education in relation to anti-Blackness and anti-Indigeneity. (We will consider as well proposals from closely related fields, such as history education and social studies education.)
Groups of two new scholars will be paired with one invited scholar-mentor. The new scholars will present their work in conference paper form in online symposium sessions open to anyone to attend, free of charge. Mentors will introduce the presenters and moderate the presentations. Afterwards, new scholars will meet privately with mentors to workshop new scholars’ papers, to assist the new scholars in refining their work in time to present it in person at the 2022 CHEA/ACHÉ conference at the Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria, BC.
There will be a peer review process to select a limited number of new scholar papers for the special online symposium. New scholars who are accepted to present their work at the 2021 CHEA/ACHÉ special online symposium are also automatically accepted to give either an updated version of their symposium paper, or an extension of that paper, in one of the regular conference sessions at the 2022 CHEA/ACHÉ conference at the Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria, BC (October 13th-15th, 2022).
CHEA/ACHÉ invites proposals for the 2021 special online symposium that meet these criteria:
- From a new scholar. (For the special online symposium, a new scholar is someone who, at the time of application, is a PhD student or candidate who has or has not presented at a CHEA/ACHÉ conference previously. Or, a recently graduated PhD (last 10 years), independent scholar or practitioner who has not presented at a CHEA/ACHÉ conference previously.)
- On any area of educational history that has the potential to renew scholarship in the field by diversifying its topics or approaches, especially in light of the field’s essential need to speak to the history of current crises, such as anti-Blackness and anti-Indigeneity. We will also consider proposals from closely related fields, such as history education and social studies education.
Applicants who meet these criteria are invited to submit a package consisting of:
- A single Word or PDF document that contains: 1) Scholar’s name and institutional affiliation(s) (or independent scholar) 2) a 250-word abstract with the presentation title, topic, approach and any conclusions; and 3) a one-page (max.) curriculum vitae that demonstrates the applicant meets the criteria for a new scholar and lists the applicants’s most relevant and recent publications and/or research activities.
