CALL FOR PAPERS

Theme: Cultures, Communities, Challenges: Perspectives on the History of EducationConference Dates: October 18-21, 2018Conference Location: Fredericton, New Brunswick (Crowne Plaza Hotel)

Canadians spend their formative years in institutions of education. Moreover, they are now expected to be part of a culture of lifelong learning. They are shaped by and in turn shape formal educational structures and informal networks, from scouts to amateur sports, YMCAs to literacy programs. While framed as individual development, educational programming is also centrally about communities and community-building. This is not always an easy relationship, as tensions over community values demonstrate. As a result, education is a site of contention, be it over religious and ethnic differences, language rights, or social and cultural expectations. Presentations at this conference will examine education’s relationship to notions of community and its role in community-building. They will also explore how new educational developments such as insights from neuroscience, the emphasis on social and emotional learning, the consequences of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, or the impact of inclusive education, are reshaping ideals and understandings of community and the enterprise of educational history itself.

The Canadian History of Education Association/Association canadienne d’histoire de l’éducation brings together students, educators, teacher educators, scholars, and community-based researchers to study the educational past from interdisciplinary perspectives. CHEA/ACHÉ broadly defines the history of education to include, but not be limited to, formal and informal settings for teaching and learning (e.g. curricula and pedagogy, as well as community groups), social and cultural approaches to education (i.e. from religious organizations to the arts), the study of children and youth (e.g. youth clubs, popular culture), as well as policy and governance of schooling (i.e. from leader biographies to policy document analysis). For CHEA/ACHÉ’s 20th biennial, peer-reviewed conference, we invite proposals that speak to the theme of Cultures, Communities, Challenges: Perspectives on the History of Education.

CHEA/ACHÉ also welcomes proposals outside of this theme that still relate to the history of education broadly-defined. Papers may be Canadian, non-Canadian, or international/transnational in scope. We are particularly welcoming of graduate students and new scholars. We welcome both individual and panel presentation proposals.

To submit a proposal, go to www.unb.ca/conferences/chea, click on “call for papers” and then click on “online submission page.” Follow the prompts under “Start your Survey”, beginning with “Select submission type”: “individual” or “panel” submission. You will be required to provide your name, address and email and then upload the abstract(s) and one-page curriculum vitae(s) as one complete Word or PDF document.

For individual presentation proposals:

Author(s) name(s);
Institutional affiliation(s) (if any);
Contact information, including mailing address and email address;
A single document that contains: 1) a 250 word abstract that includes author(s) name(s), presentation title, topic, approach and conclusions; and 2) a one-page (max.) curriculum vitae (for each author) with name, affiliation, contact e-mail and recent publications and/or research activities.
The above information should be compiled into one Word or PDF document that is saved under the conference name and the last name of the corresponding author (e.g. CHEAACHE 2018 – last name). You will be required to upload this information (click “add file”) from the saved file on your computer.

For panel presentation proposals (3-4 individuals):

Coordinating author’s name and institutional affiliation (if any);
Contact information, including mailing address and email address for the coordinating author;
A single document that contains: 1) A 100 word description of the panel theme, 2) a 250 word abstract for each panel presentation (no fewer than 3 and no more than 4 panelists) that includes author’s name, presentation title, topic, approach and conclusions; and 3) a one-page (max.) curriculum vitae (for each author) with name, affiliation, contact email and recent publications and/or research activities.
The above information should be compiled into one Word or PDF document that is saved under the conference name and the last name of the coordinating author (e.g. CHEAACHE 2018 – last name). You will be required to upload this information (click “add file”) from the saved file on your computer.
