The Founders’ Prizes of the Canadian History of Education Association (CHEA/ACHÉ) acknowledge the excellence of contributions to Canadian educational history.

Cathy James Memorial Dissertation Award



Dr. Cathy James was a historian of Canadian education and a Liberal Arts professor at Seneca College.  An active member of CHEA, she was a committed scholar, mentor to many young historians of education, and passionate believer in social justice, all qualities that informed her scholarship on the settlement movement in Toronto and the professionalization of social work. Her chapter, “Professional Enactments: Practical Training and the Education of Social Workers in Toronto, 1914-1929,” in Learning to Practise: Professional Education in Historical and Contemporary Perspectives, won the CHEA/ACHÉ Founders’ Prize for the best English-language article/chapter on the history of education, 2004-2006. Dr. James died from cancer in 2007. In 2008 CHEA/ACHÉ established the Cathy Leigh James Memorial Dissertation Prize in her memory.







E. Lisa Panayotidis Memorial Graduate Student Award



Dr. Lisa Panayotidis (1960-2016) was a professor at the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary who specialized in art history, art education, and history of higher education. She was President of CHEA from 2004 to 2006 and co-hosted the organization’s biennial conference in Calgary in 2006. She published numerous articles and co-edited books, including “Intellectual Space, Image, and Identities in the Historical Campus: Helen Kemp’s Map of the University of Toronto, 1932” Journal of the Canadian Historical Association (2004), which won the CHEA Founders’ Prize for best English-language article 2004-2006. Lisa was deeply involved as a supervisor and mentor in her students’ research and personal, professional, and scholarly advancement.
