The Founders’ Prizes and Awards of the Canadian History of Education Association (CHEA/ACHÉ) acknowledge the excellence of contributions to Canadian educational history.

CHEA/ACHÉ Founders’ Prizes and Awards include:

an English-language book/anthology; deadline for submission May 12 2024.
a French-language book/anthology; deadline for submission May 12 2024.
an English-language article/original chapter; deadline for submission May 12 2024.
a French-language article/original chapter Deadline for submission May 12 2024.
The Cathy James Memorial Dissertation Prize for a dissertation on the history of education in Canada, written in either French or English; deadline for submission May 12 2024.
The E. Lisa Panayotidis Memorial Graduate Student Award open to any graduate student who published a peer-reviewed article or chapter in the field of Canadian history of education, written in either French or English, published from April 2022 to 30 April 2024. Submission shall include a letter from the author’s thesis supervisor, department, or graduate chair indicating that the author was a registered student at the time the article or chapter was submitted for publication. Deadline for submission May 12 2024.
Distinguished Contribution Award – deadline for submission May 31 2024.

Eligibility Requirements:

2024 awards: works published by Canadian and international scholars in the field of Canadian educational history during the period between 1 May 2022 and 30 April 2024 are eligible for consideration. Dissertations must be written on the history of education in Canada and have been defended successfully during the period between 1 May 2022 and 30 April 2024.

Authors are limited to one submission per category.

Adjudication Criteria: All publication works submitted will be judged using the following criteria:

Significance to the field;

Clarity of purpose;

Originality;

Quality of the research;

Clarity of organization;

Clarity of argument/presentation of evidence; and

Clarity of writing.

Distinguished Contribution Award

The Canadian History of Education Association (CHEA/ACHÉ) established the Distinguished Contribution Award to be presented to individuals who have made a distinguished contribution to scholarship in the history of education over their careers and/or to the work of CHEA/ACHÉ.

Past recipients of this award under the current criteria are Rebecca Coulter of the University of Western Ontario (2010); Andrée Dufour of CIEQ/Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (2010); Brian Titley of the University of Lethbridge (2010); Sharon Cook of the University of Ottawa (2012); Neil Sutherland of the University of British Columbia (2012); Wyn Millar Independent Scholar (2014); Robert Gidney of the University of Western Ontario (2014); Paul Axelrod of York University (2016); Alison Prentice of the University of Toronto (2016); J. Donald Wilson of the University of British Columbia (2016); and Bruce Curtis of Carleton University (2018).

Deadline for submission is May 31, 2024.

Criteria:

The winner of this award will be expected to have:

A distinguished record of research and publication in Canadian educational history as evidenced by publications in journals with national and international status, and/or published books, by the receipt of research grants, or equivalent measures.
A distinguished record of teaching, supervision of graduate students, and preparation of teaching materials in Canadian education history, as evidenced by teaching awards, commendations from students, authorship of curriculum, presentations at a national and international level, or equivalent measures.
A distinguished service record related to Canadian educational history through leadership in CHEA/ACHÉ and associated organizations, preparation of public reports or documents, contributions to public debate about relevant issues, or equivalent measures.

Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must have made major contributions to the field of Canadian history of education through scholarship and service over an extended period of time, usually at least 10 years. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or have worked in Canadian institutions.

Nomination Requirements: A nomination letter (maximum 5 pages), up to three letters of reference (maximum 3 pages each), and a detailed CV outlining the nominee’s achievements.

We will not accept self-nominations for this award. We ask that those supporting the nomination be willing to participate in a tribute session at the biennial conference in Victoria, British Columbia, if requested by the Awards Committee.

Nominations are to be submitted electronically as a single pdf. In the subject line, include the title of the award.
